Mom Slams Netflix Series After Teen Daughter's Suicide Attempt

13 reasons why

A Florida mother claims that her teenage daughter's recent suicide attempt was inspired by the controversial Netflix series 13 Reasons WhyThe mom explained that after her 15-year-old daughter attempted to kill herself on Mother's Day, she started looking into her daughter's life. She discovered that her child was influenced by the Netflix show, and was egged on by her peers.

The girl joined a suicide pact with four other students from Okeechobee Freshman Campus and Okeechobee High School. Their plan was to run away together and change their identities so they could live without "adults telling them what to do." If they were unable to run away, they promised to commit suicide.

That is exactly what the 15-year-old girl attempted. She cut her wrists and laid in a bathtub waiting to die, just like the narrator in 13 Reasons Why. While she waited, she was texting one of the boys she made the pact with and complained that "it’s taking too long… it’s not like on 13 Reasons.”

Luckily, the boy called 911 and police arrived in time to save her life. She was rushed to the hospital and then taken to a mental health facility. She is now home recovering from her injuries and is undergoing therapy.

Netflix responded and said they are "very saddened to hear about this and grateful to those who intervened to help."

The mother blamed the series and said that she is "angry that show is out there, and even more angry there is now a season 2."

“Why even put these shows out there and put it in her mind to try to kill herself the way it is done in this show?”
