6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Idaho

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook central Idaho on Tuesday (March 31) evening. The epicenter of the quake was in the mountains about 78 miles northeast of Boise.

According to the Idaho Statesman, a resident of East Boise said the shaking lasted between 20 and 30 seconds, with a brief pause in the middle.

There are no reports of damage or injuries.

“We haven’t sent any first responders out — police or fire,” Stephany Galbreaith of the Meridian Police Department said.

Marcus Smith, an emergency room health unit coordinator at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center, which is about 65 miles south of the epicenter, told KSL that he felt the quake, but said that it did not interfere with operations in the hospital.

“It felt like a wave going through the ground, so I knew right away what it was. It just felt like waves going through the ground,” he said.
